Openness Factor: Mesh fabrics are defined by their openness factor, which indicates the percentage of open space in the weave. A higher openness factor allows for better airflow but less shade. Consider factors like the typical wind conditions in your area and the desired level of privacy when selecting the openness factor.

Material: Mesh fabrics can be made from various materials like polyethylene, PVC-coated polyester, or even acrylic-coated fiberglass. Each material offers a different balance of durability, UV resistance, and cost.

Applications: Beyond patios and decks, mesh is excellent for shading pergolas, gazebos, or even for creating temporary shade structures for events.

Canvas

Cotton vs. Synthetic: Traditional canvas is made from cotton, known for its natural breathability and classic look. However, synthetic canvas options like polyester offer improved water resistance and durability.

Weight: Canvas fabrics are categorised by weight, measured in ounces per square yard. Heavier canvas is generally more durable but also less flexible and more expensive.

Treatment: To maximise the lifespan of canvas awnings, look for fabrics treated with water repellents, mildew inhibitors, and UV blockers. Regular cleaning and re-treatment are essential for maintaining their performance.

Solution-Dyed vs. Yarn-Dyed: Solution-dyed acrylic fabrics have the color embedded in the fibers during production, making them exceptionally resistant to fading and water damage. Yarn-dyed acrylics, while still durable, may be more susceptible to fading over time.

Coatings: Many acrylic fabrics come with additional coatings to enhance water repellency, stain resistance, and UV protection. These coatings can prolong the life of your awning and reduce maintenance needs.

Sustainability: Some manufacturers offer acrylic fabrics made from recycled materials, making them an environmentally friendly option.

Laminated vs. Coated: PVC fabrics can be either laminated or coated. Laminated fabrics have a layer of PVC film bonded to a base fabric, offering superior strength and waterproofness. Coated fabrics have a PVC layer applied to the surface, providing good protection at a lower cost.

Fire Resistance: PVC fabrics are inherently flame resistant, making them a safe choice for commercial applications and areas with fire codes.

Welding: PVC fabrics can be welded together to create seamless awnings, eliminating the need for stitching and potential weak points.
